But no, instead we force them into deadlines, throw more money at them which seals their fate for more responsibility. I don't understand how businesses don't fucking understand that happy healthy employees who feel appreciated want to go above and beyond on their own accord. On a separate note, mental health and looking after each other would honestly boost productivity so much. They’ve pushed us past our point time and time again. I want to support and encourage them when I sense they're burnt out, and they are. I have this one life and I’m not going to slave away on CAD producing designs soley driven by profit margins, underslept and valued, building someone elses business.Įveryday I sit at my desk and all I want to do is reach out to my team and tell them how much I appreciate them and their efforts on working on my project, even when their bosses won’t. I sound like a doe-eyed college student again but I don’t care. I got into this job for community, to make a positive impact. I did not get into design for someone's Gross Profit, who underpays me and pushes me past my point of sanity for their business margins. I watch a video on social media of human and environmental suffering and I cry like a giant woman-child and want to do something about it. I care about communities and the environment. The company made me objectify marginalised communities into a buzzword in my design package that would look appealing to the local Council, to ensure a company sale. The very fact I had to explain inclusive design and what FULL wheelchair accessibility looked like, to the product engineer making close to double my salary, in order for him to understand that that we were putting forward was ablist as fuck, bewildered me. Seriously I couldn’t believe the complete sociopathy I came across! This one time, my manager told me to call my design “inclusive” when we only had a budget for some disabled children and not all. Once again, I was working along side people who cared more about profit above anything else. So I went into commercial and government design work designing parks and playgrounds with the lucrative benefits of working within a private company who manufactured the play equipment. High end landscape residential design was so unbelievably pretenious and was met again with the same egotistical controlling bosses who presented my design ideas and CAD as their own and refused to pay me more despite inflation increases. My first job as an intern was low paying, high stress and extremely toxic. What I wasn't ready for was the ego involved with design, the creative director- or should I say, dictatorship of a small design firm. What I didn't realise about the industry is that like every corporate and capitalist venture, it’s driven by money. I did it because it combined my passions for design and the environment in one beautiful title. "The truth is, I didn't get into Landscape Architecture to make money.
